Song Review: “Everything Ends”

JP Saxe’s newest single “Everything Ends”, which features Lizzy McAlpine and Tiny Habits, is an ode to the vocalists' celebration in their romantic relationship. Given the title of the song, this theme contradicts what one would most likely infer the song to be about, or at least that is what happened in my case!

After reading the title I predicted that this song would be a song about heartbreak, but to my surprise it is quite the opposite. It begins by telling the very start of the lovers’ story through the male’s perspective: skipping small talk to talk about deeper things, naming dogs at the park, and kissing like he knows this relationship is forever. I think that this verse really captures the essence of a love at first sight situation, where both partners felt that initial connection and things quickly blossomed from there. And given the rest of the song, this honeymoon phase does not disintegrate over time, but rather the connection grows along with them. The soft vocals and light acoustic guitar riffs help illustrate this euphoric, giddy feeling of being so in love with someone right off the bat.

The song then switches to the female’s perspective where she talks about how she would do anything to be with her partner all of the time and that there is nowhere else she would rather be. A line that really stuck out to me was “Remember when we’d still been in more cities than weeks”. This depicts just how quickly this relationship moved and how many experiences they had together without the time frame that most people would expect for a relationship of this nature. The first time I listened to that line I had to rewind it and listen to it again just to think about that statement and the weight it carries.

The song ends by concluding that “everything ends except us” which ties things back to the song title and provides a happy ending to the story. Overall this song, though simple, is very well written and provides a very sweet love story. If you ever want to hear a song that will make you say “aw!” then this is the song for you!
