Song Review: "Illusion of Separateness" - Dessauer

A movie in the mind. A rhythmic heartbeat of smoke and stars. The wind-rustled snow whirls softly as the breeze touches its furling twines. Tendrils of sunlight break over a sloped mountain peak. There is notice in the peace. A drift of emotion. The voices of the mountain moan and ask. They are unsure. There are tones. There is talk of confusion and doubt. The breeze quickens and they are slowly realizing. What has happened to this mountain of snow? So peaceful nestled in its range of monstrous hills?

Electronic musician and mind-painting artist “Dessauer” dawned another day with the release of his newest piece, called “Illusion of Separateness”. The descriptions above are scenes that appeared to me as I first listened to the track, and are only enunciated as I listened more and more. With high fast-paced rhythms coupled into rising and falling notes, Dessauer introduces listeners to his score of another world. He uses the beat and climb of tones to create a vivid image and further portray the emotions of message within his music. A story. His story.

Dessauer, an artist name dubbed from his maternal grandmother’s heritage. He carries it as a dedication to her and his lineage as he returned to Germany after his family fled it to start a better life almost one century ago. A  fresh start. Dessauer was also misdiagnosed with Bipolar disorder as an early teen, and struggled with the side effects of overmedication. Now recovered and healthy, it’s also a testament of new life, a fresh beginning. The path that his history has followed is portrayed beautifully in the patterns of his music, as they mirror the very emotions and feelings that were stirred. Leaving old life behind, and embodying the promise of rebirth and rejuvenation! It’s a powerful testimony, one that all people can find relation to in their own stories. Who were we back then? How did we overcome? How are we healing? Just another tie to each other and way to connect over the trials and stumblings of life intertwined. We are all woven together in the grand scheme. And it’s music like this that so reminds us of that fact.
