Song Review: “Make Me a Robot” - Tilly Louise

Tilly Louise was born and raised in Liverpool. At just the age of 23, she has crafted her spot within the alternative pop scene. Her sound is influenced by artists such as Paramore and Blondie; striving to write and perform honest, yet powerful songs. She began gaining attention of others in 2019 when she started opening for other artists on tour; this lasted through 2020 which was a catalyst for her debut single "Be Like You".

Since then, she has released quite a few popular singles such as "Laughing", "Calypso" and "Join the Club". However, her most recent work has to be among my favorite. This year she released a song called "Make Me a Robot" which is truly such a unique yet fun song.

It has those very prominent alternative pop vibes; with a catchy electric guitar progression, heavy percussion, and vocals that leave you wanting to dance. At first glance, it sounds very happy, joyful and fun until you really dive deep; looking at the lyrics actually really sets the undertone for what the meaning behind the song is. The chorus in particular hits very hard.

Why would anyone fall in love?
cause i'll never be what you want
Why would anyone want this?
Useless bones in a sack of skin?

It evokes the process and emotions that are felt in (what seems to be) a toxic relationship. That longing for a perfect relationship, and looking past all the negatives to make it work. It speaks about the innocence that can be felt when going into a new relationship, but also the sense of worthlessness that comes when that narrative is shattered; hence the line "Why would anyone want this useless? Useless bones in a sack of skin?". Also, how a person can be so willing to change for a person just to be with them. "Just a moment in time, it was nice to hear your name"; meaning that while they know the end of the relationship is inevitable, it is worth enduring everything just to experience that one moment of bliss and happiness. They would rather lose themselves and feel like a robot than to be without that person.

That is what made this song very relatable and open, in my opinion. Everyone goes through relationship troubles, but having songs like this is comforting in a way. It shows no one is alone, no matter what we go through. The upbeat melody combined with the deep lyrics proves for a truly remarkable song!

Tilly Louise will be releasing her debut album on June 16th, so be sure to stay tuned for that! Below is a link to her Spotify page!
