Album Review: “Waste My Revenge” by The Thing With Feathers

Nashville- based alt-rock, indie pop band, The Thing With Feathers, delivered their sophomore EP, Waste My Revenge, to the world today. The first single from the EP, ‘Don’t Break My Heart,’ was released back in August of 2022. This followed the release of their first EP, Sundays in the South, which is a collective of songs that takes the listener through the phases of a weekend. Waste My Revenge has a unique nostalgic, yet modern feel to it. Every song blends perfectly together and creates a cohesive narrative that is sure to speak to anyone who listens.

The album begins with a catchy guitar riff to open ‘Don’t Break My Heart’. This song is the perfect opening to the album because it catches your attention and compels you to want to dance. This song evokes a sense of seductive urgency inside of the listener with undertones that drip with desire. ‘Don’t Break My Heart’ is about two people who share an immediate connection and attraction to one another, but one party is nervous they cannot keep up, hence the lyric, ‘don’t break my heart.’ This one is one of my favorites The Feathers have released.

Track 2, ‘Everything I’m Missing,’ slows it down just a little bit, but don’t be fooled by the first few seconds of the song. This song is upbeat and captures the essence of the lyrics. ‘Everything I’m Missing’ speaks deeply to me because its about losing your youth and settling down, which is scary for a young person. As young adults trying to find our way in the world, we are often, as the song says, drawn to constant commotion. As fun and upbeat as this song is, I think it serves as an important reminder that its okay to slow down sometimes.

Track 3, ‘Golden,’ serves up gritty guitar riffs and introspective lyrics. The ethos of ‘Golden’ is to evoke a sense of longing within the listener. It’s about wanting someone who feels unreachable or out of touch from you. The Feathers do such a great job with creating heavy hitting lyrics that meld perfectly with upbeat tracks.

Track 4, ‘These Drugs,’ hits us all where it hurts. With a sound that reminds me of The 1975s early sound, ‘These Drugs’ is another one of my favorites on the EP. The way I interpreted it, this song explores the idea of always fighting with someone, maybe a significant other or partner, and understanding that is not love, but it’s like a drug you can’t escape.

Track 5, ‘Waste My Revenge’ is a fun and heavy-hitting song that reflects on a lost relationship. The lyrics explore events in this past relationship and what happens if you lower your guard with this person again. ‘Waste My Revenge’ is a reflective track on past loves and broken hearts.

Track 6, ‘Can You See Me’ rounds out the album in the most perfect way. I will shamelessly say this is my favorite release from The Feather thus far. The groovy, plucky guitar and low beat of the drum, mixed with saccharine vocals, evokes the same feelings within that driving with the windows down at night does. This song can speak to a vast majority of people because I believe we’ve all been with someone who we felt like could not see us at all for who we truly are.

‘Wast My Revenge’ is a heavy hitter in The Thing With Feather’s discography. For it to only be their sophomore EP, I believe they have found their sound and their niche within the music scene. This album has no skips for me and many of the songs have a steady place in my everyday listening playlist now as well. I’m excited to watch The Feathers grow and flourish as they keep forging their place in the world of music.
