Album Review: “You’re Awful At This”

My favorite pieces to write are about up and coming small artists just trying to make their mark on the world. This next artist, surely is going to do that. Himynameiscalvin is a diy punk musician based in Rochester, NY. Today, September 15th, his 3rd album "YOU’RE AWFUL AT THIS" has been released and i have the honor of taking you through each song and what emotions i felt.

There are seven songs on the album, and each one kind of fits into a few different categories. This, of course, is up to interpretation, so i encourage you to listen on your own!

There are feelings of energy, and excitement very present on this project; with songs like "Everyone hates you" and "Pawn shop guitar". These are the best ones to focus on for a day cruising around with the windows down. I predict they're easy to memorize because of the soft flowing lyrics, epic bass lines, and overall positive vibes.

Also, there are songs that truly fit into that punk/rock category. "Golden Teeth" feels more emotional, leading with strong guitar riffs while "Sucks" brings in the noticeable percussion. These songs focus a lot on the instrumental aspect of the project, making it the main focus for the listener; allowing for more dancing, and enjoyment.

The album, however, is rounded out well with the last 3 songs; these give more of what i call a 'vibe' sound. "Jab" with its unique synthesizer, and softer tone. "Wake up from my dreams" providing a lighter instrumental and dreamy sound. As well as "Polaroid" also fitting into those characteristics.

Overall, it is a very well-rounded album and i highly recommend listening! There is nothing more rewarding than supporting small up-and-coming artists! As i said before, he is definitely one to be on the lookout for.
