Chappell Roan’s new song “Red Wine Supernova" may just be the sapphic song of the summer we all have been waiting for. Delivering possibly her campiest bop to date, Roan’s new single captures the joys and wonders of queer love.

Chappell Roan is an indie pop artist who released an EP titled “School Nights” in 2017 and also has a catalog of singles. She is most well known for her songs “Pink Pony Club” and “Naked in Manhattan” but for the past couple of years she has consistently put out amazing indie pop singles. Everything she releases displays a different side of herself but her voice and point of view always stay prominent. She examines a list of subjects in her songs including, but not limited to: sapphic longing, toxic relationships, and girlhood.

“Red Wine Supernova” contains everything one could possibly want from a pop song. From the cheeky lyrics to the use of her stunning vocals to the electronic beat that never fails to make me tap my foot, the song is so endearingly catchy. Taking a look at the lyrics, Roan describes a girl that she is completely infatuated with and describes these feelings for her as a “red wine supernova” because they are so passionate and all-encompassing. The song is also exceptionally girly in the best way possible where Roan references things like “miniskirt(s)” and “go-go boots.” She lists all the things she likes about this girl and fully paints a picture of how intense her feelings have become. Throughout the song, Roan exhibits clever plays on words in a way that is both evocative and amusing .

The bridge of the song serves as a campy interlude with a spoken section that manages to remain upbeat and keep up with the progression of the song. Roan includes chanting/spoken parts of the song which are reminiscent of her single “Femininomenon'' which was released last year. Even with these similarities, the song manages to remain distinct. Chanting remains as a driving force in the background of the song to fully clarify Roan’s lyrics as well as add extra energy into the song. I think the use of this is brilliant and makes the song amazingly catchy. Overall, she manages to encapsulate what it is to be a girl who is in love with another girl and the myriad of feelings that accompanies the experience.

Roan may have outdone herself with this latest single and she released it just in time for summer. I will certainly be tuned in to see what is next for Chappell Roan and I would highly suggest checking out “Red Wine Supernova” if you haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet!
