Song review: Madison Cunningham's "Inventing the Wheel"

Still glowing red-hot from its recent release and Grammy win, singer/songwriter Madison Cunningham is now set to deliver a deluxe version of her newest album, Revealer, on May 5th, 2023. The new collection will hold not one, but two more tracks; the first being “Hospital (One Man Down)”, a revised version of the original song “Hospital”, and the other dubbed “Inventing The Wheel”, a previously unreleased track that has now set ablaze it’s own wondrous fires within the world of Revealer.

Officially unleashed unto the world on April 5th, “Inventing The Wheel'' has clearly dug its beautiful roots into the modern folk music scene at just a week old. Already taking flight and well beyond 90,000 plays so far, “Inventing the Wheel” has the talent of bewitching listeners beyond expectation. Coupled with the continuously spellbinding vocals of Madison, her simple plucking of guitar strings leads the tone of this track down a path possessing emotion and canvassing curiosity. Wrapped within the lyrics is a message positively everyone can relate to, but doesn’t always address: that nothing we have done, are doing, or plan to do hasn’t already been experienced, attempted, and realized by another human. Whether it be in the past, in the present, or the future. Which, come to think of it, is stunningly relieving. We are learning, we are human, and everyone is seeing each day for the first time. No one has any sort of clue what tomorrow holds for them. Yet thankfully, we can find great comfort in the reality that we aren’t alone. There’s always someone who can relate to your situation and, surely, offer advice, offer assistance, or simply exist as a comfort in the wondering. As we personally travel through each trial and victory of this short time on Earth, we need to hold ourselves and our feelings with grace. We’re all figuring it out. You are not inventing the wheel. You are simply experiencing life, no matter how freeing or knotted the emotions that follow may be. As Madison herself stated at a recent press release, “It was one of those songs that, once realized, was able to write itself.” And what a lovely way to express that fact. A calming melody for a calming understanding. It’s guaranteed that each listener has and will pick up pieces of themselves within the song; we’re woven into the words.

It’s our anthem in humanity and an entrancing allegory of inspiration for life.
